Description:
This eviction has taken place in the house of the widow McNamara, Bodyke, Co Clare in June 1887. During the Plan of Campaign tenants on parts of Colonel O'Callaghan's estate at Bodyke withheld their rents and twenty eight families were evicted, including eighty year old Mrs McNamara, her three sons and two daughters.
The tenants were supported by the local clergy, two of whom appear in the photograph- one standing on the left and the other seated and wearing a top hat.
This image is from the Lawrence Collection, which consists of over 40,000 glass plate negatives held in the national Photographic Archive of the National Library of Ireland. The Lawrence collection dates mainly from the period 1880 to 1914 and provides a fascinating insight into life in Ireland in this period.
