Description:
These columns in the entrance portico at Fota house are a good example of how architects use fluting as a device to make columns look slimmer and more elegant. Fluting is a series of long rounded grooves carved into the stone of a column in a repeat pattern. This optical effect is further enhanced by the light falling on the furrows deepening the textured effect through shadow.
